ADHD Medication: Basic Side Effects

Most people are aware of the fact that using ADHD medications can cause a number of side effects. In a society where medication has become highly popularized, many of us have adopted a casual approach to their use. Still, the carefree manner in which we may use medication doesn’t detract from the reality that the human body is a sensitive and interconnected system – to thrive, we require a specific internal environment. When we introduce chemicals into it, we alter and manipulate the precise balance needed to maintain our system. Every side effect we experience while taking medication for ADHD is the result of an action taking place within the body.

My Experience With Stimulants

When someone is diagnosed with ADHD, medication and therapy are often prescribed. I was given prescriptions for several types of medications for ADHD (Ritalin, Concerta, Dextroamphetamine) before concluding that chemical solutions were not for me. I felt as if my nervous system was being drained – I experienced twitches, headaches and suffered from extremely dry mouth and eyes.

The medication also effected my mood. At times my thoughts became very negative and I was overcome with feelings of hopelessness and despair, all for no apparent reason. These negative experiences drove me to find alternative ways to manage my ADHD symptoms.
