The Major Upper Chakras
The Heart Chakra
The heart chakra governs love, empathy, selflessness and devotion – it also provides love to all the other chakras. It is the bridge between the lower physical energy bodies and the higher spiritual ones. The heart chakra is powerful but fragile and relies on the other chakras to remain balanced.
People with an excessively compassionate heart often find themselves over-extended, heavily burdened by the pain and suffering of others. This has a draining effect that – even with the best intentions – often impedes real progress. On the other hand, people who have loved and lost often become overprotective of their hearts. These people may find it difficult to show compassion for others and for themselves.
The Throat Chakra
The throat chakra is associated with self-expression, responsibility and will-power. It enables us to express what we want, what we believe in and what we stand for. It also helps us take responsibility for our actions and to accept the consequences, good or bad. People with an overactive throat chakra often talk too much or too loudly and cannot listen to others. People with an under-active throat chakra struggle to speak up or communicate their needs.
The Third Eye
This chakra is linked to intuition and extra sensory perception (ESP). People with a healthy third eye possess special insight and are tuned to higher energetic frequencies. Artistic and intellectual creativity are also sixth chakra characteristics. The third eye helps us consciously create our reality. Its Sanskrit name “Ajna”, means ‘Command.’ This is because a trained third eye can command acts of creation.
A third eye imbalance may cause people to be overly analytical. People with a ‘closed’ third eye look down on spirituality and refuse to embrace anything not proven scientifically or by rational analyses. On the other hand, if the third eye is overactive and not supported by the other chakras, it makes a person feel flighty and not present. They may get lost in fantasies and dreams, never touching ground to embrace the reality of life in the present moment.
The Crown Chakra
The crown chakra connects us to the ‘bigger picture’ and gives us a sense of oneness with the universe. It guides us towards our true life purpose and is related to the unexplainable. Like the leaves of a tree, the crown chakra reaches for the sky to help us grow, learn and live in harmony with our essence.
The crown chakra nudges us when we need to make a life change. Ignoring these impulses causes us to lose our sense of purpose. We may keep ourselves occupied and hide behind other responsibilities, but our inner voice will continue to urge us on until we listen and adjust.
